Alcatraz Prison: First it was a vast, powerful Fortress and Military Prison, armed to the teeth and secluded in the perfect tactical position. Then it was chanced from a war prison to a maximum security Penitentiary for America's finest criminals. After the prison shut it's gates, local Native Americans took control of the island. A few years later, the land again fell into the hands of the government, and today it stands as a Golden Gate Historic Park.
The island, located a mile and a half from the city of San Francisco and separated on all sides by water, is very very vast. Today, many of the ancient buildings still remain on the island for public view. One of the most famous is the Alcatraz Cell House, which housed all the inmates of Alcatraz Prison.
Today, you can take an audio tour of the cell house, and hear stories of peace, terror, content, pain, and listen to quotes from many of the officers and inmates on the island at the time of operation. It's one of the most amazing places I've ever been to, and I'm sure if you went there you too would share the feeling.
